The main helmet/visor unwrapping should take up at least 50% of the space.

Also, both the main part and visor unwrapping don't look quite right. I'd hazard a guess that it will stretch/warp a bit

As WILSON said, make the proportion 2:1 (x:y), ie so the helmet res is something like 1024w x 512h

Just scale all of the uv by 0.5 in the x direction. Then rescale everything, and move stuff around. Save the UV layout as 1024w x 1024h, then resize it to 1024w x 512h.

yep there is no selection other than square uv images ie 1024x1024 2048x2048 etc

unless you can import a smaller image even though its set to 1024x1024 for example ? :/ i realy wish the model creation and uv mapping part of wing was incorporated into other major 3d programs :/

I'm sure its possible to scale the uv mapping? Can you at least somehow scale the uv frame?

I think you can, just not in one step. Just lay everything out how you want it, and make sure everything fits inside the image. Then scale the y axis by 1.5 (150%). Make a 1024 x 1024 texture in wings with a pass that draws the edges (makes the wireframe). Export it from wings as a .png. Then go into Gimp and scale it too 1024 x 512.

There you go, a 1024 x 512 wireframe, without anything out of proportion.

You might want to make a design under the logos like all helmets have. You know how some helmets have cool looking flares and whatnot? Just make a new layer with some kind of design like that. Hopefully that will getting it looking better.

Yes, i am assuming you're using Gimp. Just get the stock wireframe, andright click > colors > color to alpha, and the default color is white, just click okay, and that will give you a layer with just the wireframe, then make a new layer under it to make your designs and logos. When you're done, and want to save as a .png, make the wireframe layer invisible, and if you don't know how, just delete it. Now, if you make your skin iwht layers, and want to save those laers to work on later, save the file as "filename.psd".

Sorry to get off topic Jon, this is kind of a "beginning of skinning" tutorial haha.
